Yesterday, was an amazing, amazing day... amazing. Amazing in that it was so tough to deal with such a shocking reality. My spirit was properly humbled and reset by the passing of 1 of the most incredible men, if not THE MOST influential man to ever walk planet Earth.

My 1st home computer was the Apple IIc http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_IIc which came with disks that were actually... "floppy" !

The games I had were Where in the World is Carmen Sandiago, Jeopardy, Family Fued and Karateka. I gotta tell you.. Jeopardy had me dwarfing kids in elementary school at 1 point...I was a bit ahead because of random jeopardy knowledge.

This is the message I wrote to Apple:

I just want to say, it is an extreme blessing to be alive during a period of time where Steve Jobs spearheaded a company to make advancements in technology and animation soooooo fast, like my wildest dreams came true. As a child (birthyear 1978), I watched "The Jetson's" in the mornings as I ate breakfast before going to school. Steve Job's really made some JETSON TYPE STUFF HAPPEN. I just cannot believe it, and I am really thankful!

I would've never thought touch screen on the phone was possible, talking to friends and family face to face on the iphone, taking videos, photos and just more was even a possibility...

I am just really grateful and I sending love and peace to his family, friends and coworkers. He is still alive in the very awesome tools we now have in our hands and homes and I really look forward to continuing to use what he helped invent and innovate to make our lives that much more easier and that much more connected with each other.

Brother Ernie, Cancer and My story

Legendary Hip Hop photographer and mentor Ernie Paniccioli has cancer and below is my personal testimony in hopes we can make a donation!

Imagine going through a tumultuous break up with 1 of the crews in NYC that has incredible potential to be the best. Imagine taking a 1 year hiatus from MCin and Producing and reevaluating life as a whole, as an artist and visionary. Imagine getting invited by 1 of the younger, upcoming and talented crews to perform at BBAS Thursday to implant yourself back in the music scene. Imagine coming face to face with eyes (and the camera) behind Hip Hop on that same night, prior to performing infront of a hot, very young, very packed room full of NYC's young minds, opinions and more.

BBAS Thursday was a few days before my job with The College Board ended. My job was moving to another state and I opted NOT to follow but pursue music full time. I told some friends about the BBAS show but not many. One of my friends, Shreen, agreed to be 1 of my guests on stage that night.. her poetry is incredible and extremely heartfelt. That night, shreen bumped into a man that told me when he say me... "hahaha...I am your dad... I am your dad but you don't realize I am your father but I am...I'll explain soon..."

I met my "father" who stood powerfully in front of me, next to Shreen and Rachel and 1 of his comrades and I was in awe. When I shook his hand I actually said "wow" that is when he mentioned about being my father without me really knowing. I did the knowledge to many things but to this point I never saw Ernie Paniccioli face to face. It almost felt like the day I met Mohammed Ali. It was that powerful!

We walked to Voodoo Lounge and it was packed in there. I got to sit down and build with Ernie for 20 minutes or so, prior to performing. I caught wind of the 1st performance..the room was packed but the energy was kind of "meh!" The first artist was skilled but didn't bring that UMMPH to the stage!

Majesty showed up to help me out on stage, he was my other guest feature and I took stage second. I remember the DJ for the night went out of order with my MP3s so I did "Halozzz" first. The song is a bit slow..so I wasn't happy I somehow started off with that! the DJ was not paying attention when I signaled for him to change it but I kept going... I'll be water for the night. The crowd after I performed that joint was 40% with me 60% not with me. Mind you my bosses from The College Board came down to Voodoo Lounge to support me. In my mind the crowd was kind of not "really" into it BUT i was already hulked out based on my talk with Brother Ernie prior to getting on stage. "Monsta Eyez" was the next song, featuring Gamma-Ra aka Majesty from the BX. WE tore through that sh*t and the crowd was 1000% behind us.. it was ill to see Homeboy Sandman, and a few other great artists like Top $ Raz rocking with us! It was a blessing. I followed up with an acapella and then Shreen went into her poem. We bodied that show!

It was most amazing that although busy, Ernie came thru, to show love, just for my set, before proceeding to be on his way and he even took time to take photos of me which was a huge honor for someone that has documented hip hop with photography since the beginning! On the night of my biggest show after the biggest hiatus in my life, I meet the eyes of Hip Hop itself... It was a blessing and even more so that Ernie captured some of it!

Prior to leaving the stage I told the fans to make noise for "Brother Ernie" and gave him the ill shout out! He was humble...I am sure he's gotten tons of shout outs over the years but I had to let him know...that there is definitely love in the building yo!

What amazes me is that there is no video at all, for that event to this day! WE tore that SHIT the FUCK DOWN yo! It was so dope that Top Dolla came over to me when I got off stage like " yo.. you raised the bar for the night ...I gotta try to do even better now" He said something similar to that!

here's the deal.... I had a lot to deal with, mentally, working with an incredible team of MCs in my past but that team never had my best interest at heart. All the hearsay and more was extremely troublesome for me because I live, to love and support my friends and family...that is who I've been since childhood. Being in a crew, with some of the most powerful members having cruel intentions truly makes you feel invalidated as an artist and a man. My haitus and return was validate and knighted by 1 of the most powerful roots to the tree of Hip Hop life itself. And it was a HUGE and super validating experience to meet such an incredible and fatherly figure. Because he's seen it all and he came thru to validate and thus, validated me...and although outside validation

Brother Ernie I found out, has cancer. We have to do what we can to make sure he gets treatment. I see people spend money on BS all day but when it comes to our elders and REAL peoples, we don't have money for it! I am blessed because kickstarter friends really got behind me to support me and donate towards me at 1 point in time, and that was for something material. But this is health itself... Ernie needs us...considering he's given so much to the planet already, visually...we have to give back...there is no excuses.

Songwriting and Writer’s Block: 11 tips to help the songwriter get UNSTUCK!

Iconic songs come in all shapes and flavors: from Kermit the Frog’s plaintive rendition of “The Rainbow Connection” to AC/DC raging with “Back In Black,” from Thelonious Monk’s wistful meanderings on “’Round Midnight” to John Lennon’s utopian dreaming with “Imagine.” Obviously, the list goes on an on – and wonderfully enough, on a regular basis, inspired songwriters add new entries to the pantheon of timeless compositions.

Creating a memorable song is rarely as easy as just humming a pretty melody and writing down some lyrics, though. And just like writers of prose or non-fiction, even the most successful songwriters hit creative walls.

So where do you turn when you can’t seem to remember how to write a song? What do you do if you’ve got an explosive first verse but can’t come up with a chorus? What if you’re stuck with a blank page in front of you and don’t know where to start? Here are some tips from a range of experienced songwriters to help you overcome your own writer’s block.

1. Start with a title
“Find an interesting title and most of the song will often write itself,” says songwriter, guitarist, and producer Tommy Marolda, who has written tunes with Richie Sambora and Rod Stewart. “That’s something I’ve used in a lot of my songwriting.” Successful song-crafters like Bon Jovi and Diane Warren have used this strategy, and songs like “Living’ On A Prayer,” “Bed Of Roses,” and “Dead Or Alive” were written this way. “With most songs, the title tells the whole story,” he continues.

But where can you get an intriguing song title if the ideas just aren’t flowing? “Try looking at magazines,” says Marolda. “You can flip through the table of contents and sometimes they use interesting hyperbole or plays on words that can spark something in you. Or go to a poetry section in a book store and look at the titles of poems.”

Marolda strongly recommends adapting phrases to make them your own before using them as your song title. “Sometimes you can just substitute one word for another,” he says. “If you substitute words inside the framework of an already clever title, you can often come up with something original.”

2. Look and listen everywhere
“Whether you’re on a train, walking around, or just having a conversation, you never know what you’re going to hear,” says independent singer/songwriter Natalie Gelman. “When I’m really in the moment and paying attention to what’s happening around me, sometimes I’ll hear someone say something random and think, ‘That’s a great line! I should use that.’”

For Marolda, “listening everywhere” includes checking out pre-fabricated drum grooves from music production libraries for musical inspiration. Guitarist, producer, and composer Chris Munger, who has worked with bands like Public Enemy and networks such as Comedy Central, uses his native surroundings to spark inspiration. “Since I live in New York City, I love to go out and people watch and make up stories about the people I see,” he says.

3. Carry a notebook, voice recorder, or both
This may seem basic, but since you never know when inspiration will strike, it’s important to have a way to document a great musical idea whenever it comes along.

If you’re comfortable with traditional musical notation, a small notebook with staff lines can be all you need. If you prefer to sing your melodies, a voice recorder on a smart phone or another small recording device can do the trick.

Gelman recalls one time when she came up with a great musical idea, but had neither pen and paper nor any sort of recording device nearby to document it. Her solution? Borrowing a friend’s phone, calling her own voicemail, and singing the fresh lick to her own voice mail.

4. Keep unfinished ideas
Even if you’re only able to come up with a verse here and a chorus there, save everything you write, recommends Marolda. “A lot of famous songwriters have a suitcase full of ideas that they pull for different songs when they get stuck,” he says. “Go back into your own catalog of unfinished work and see what’s hanging out. You’d be surprised that a bridge you wrote years ago might fit perfectly with a song you’re working on now.”

Marolda’s trove of songwriting bits and pieces includes writing pads with lyrics and melodies, some finished, some unfinished. He also saves pages filled with unused song titles. “When I was writing for Richie Sambora’s solo records, all he would ask for were titles and ideas,” says Marolda. “There are hundreds of things that he didn’t use and I still have them here. I’ve turned them into songs for Rod Stewart and other people.”

5. Write a lot
For Gelman, more hours spent writing music means an easier overall creative process. “Writing constantly helps you become comfortable with the act of crafting songs — and with yourself as a songwriter,” she says. “As songwriters, we have to accept the good, the bad, and the ugly that comes out when we write. It’s important not to reject anything that you write, and to keep writing.”

Part and parcel of writing a lot is working on whatever inspires you at any given moment, regardless of whether or not it fits into your genre of choice. Are you a shred-metal guitarist who suddenly comes up with a great Zydeco accordion line? Write it down. Even if it’s totally unusable for your current band or project, you never know when such a creative tidbit might come in handy down the road.

6. Identify your own clichés
“When there’s a block, it’s not because you hear nothing,” says keyboardist Danny Louis, who plays and writes for groundbreaking blues-rock band Gov’t Mule. “It’s that you’re hearing your old clichés. You’re just getting that same old bridge and pre-chorus that you’ve written a million times.” In moments of creative frustration, it can be easy to fall back on those comfortable licks, melodies, and chord progressions you’ve been using for years. But being able to smell your own clichés can also give you the awareness you need to do something truly unique.

7. Keep your inner critic at bay
Self-criticism can be a crippling force when you’re trying to write a song, and anything you can do to turn down the volume while penning words or melodies will be well worth it. “Good writing, just like acting or singing, is a marriage of heart, talent, and skill,” says Aurora Barnes, who writes music for Dramatico Entertainment. “If it’s meaningful to you, it will be to someone else as well.”

“The biggest problem songwriters face is fear,” asserts Gelman. “You can get scared of any number of things — but the most common one is, will my stuff be any good? You really just have to be present when you’re writing, honor whatever comes out, and make sure to capture or record it. Judging yourself in the moment won’t get you anywhere.”

8. Ask for help
“I usually have a three-to-seven day window in which I find I can finish a song myself,” says Gelman. “If I don’t finish something by then, I usually bring in someone to help me.”

Rather than seeing a co-writer as a crutch, Gelman sees it as an opportunity to push herself as a songwriter. “My friend Brad Yoder once described co-writing as looking at someone else’s crossword puzzle and filling in the gaps,” she says. “I love co-writing. As a songwriter, it can help you go where you’re scared to go by yourself.”

Choosing the right co-writer can be as challenging as choosing the right band mate or producer, so proceed with caution. Ask trusted colleagues for referrals and try to pick collaborators who you think will give your work the respect and attention it deserves.

9. Write on a secondary instrument
For Louis, creating fresh musical ideas often means writing songs on more unfamiliar instruments; in fact, much of his writing for Gov’t Mule happens on guitar, even though he plays keys for the band. “One thing I try that totally throws me for a loop is to pick up a bass guitar, improvise melodies on the bass, and sing a bass line at the same time,” he says. “The less familiar you are with the instrument you’re playing, the better. It really helps you break out of your own clichés.”

Louis also recommends spending a few hours with a drum kit, especially if you’re not a drummer. “A lot of times, the pitches of the drums, and cymbals, can be inspiring,” he says. “You can fart around on the drums to create melodic ideas that you could never pick out on a guitar or keyboard. If you just play the drums as notes, you can come up with both rhythms and note patterns that can be really inspiring.”

10. Take a break
“Sometimes you just need to eat,” says Barnes. “You need to be re-inspired. Sometimes I listen to music, read a book, go for a walk, or maybe even turn on the TV for a bit.”

For Munger, physical exercise often does the trick. “I feel like that’s a great way to clear your head and inspire you,” he says, also pointing towards watching a good movie as a useful mental reprise. “You have to walk away from your instrument when you’re having a writing block,” he continues. “Songwriting is like anything in life. Time away makes coming back that much better.”

11. Use your favorite artists for inspiration
“Sit down with recordings of some of your favorite songs and jam along with them, regardless of what instrument you play,” recommends Marolda. “Doing so may spark ideas for you instrumentally, relating to chord structure or chord progression, or may give something that will then turn into a full song of your own.”

Marolda is not advocating ripping off your idols. “You’d think that you’re just copying someone else’s work, but your interpretation is going to be completely different,” he promises. “Just stop the original piece of music and record the chords that you were playing, or the piano part that you came up with, and use that as a seed for something new. Ask yourself, ‘What if I went here instead of using this chord that they used?’”

We had the pleasure to film Faro-Z of New Rap Order performing "Kings vs N****s" of the Only Built 4 Afro-Cuban Linx project . Faro-Z and New Rap Order team really helped raise the bar and set the tone, performance wise for the rest of the Black August performances featuring Kalae, Les Nubians, K-Salaam, MeccaGodZilla, Cavalier, Hasan Salaam, DJ Spinna and more!

It's been a while since we've seen a team, that you could tell, if they were hooping, would be that team that never gets off the court on weekend pickup games. It was a masterful set, spearheaded by Faro-Z. One highlight that stands out the most is the incredible and very angelic opening by songstress Trezure Empire. Secondly, Faro Z, extremely tenacious in delivering a message had another lead emcee as backup, hypeman...Cavalier. Cavalier of BK opened Black August and it was amazing to see the synergy between Faro and Cavalier as Faro left spaces open for Cavalier to fill in backups, perfectly. Now if only Hip Hop DX, All Hip Hop, Okayplayer, 2dopeboyz, DJ booth and more were in the house to see such a flawless performance. And we didn't even post the footage with Faro's dancers yet either! 1 word... WOW!

Honorable mention: Supernova who ventures on stage later in the set and MC K Swift for holding down the 1s & 2s.

Ashford and Simpson are the dynamic duo that influenced a great deal of me musically. My parents used to play the vinyl each weekend when it was time to clean house.

They were 1 of the first soul acts I sampled from when I started producing Hip Hop Beats in 2000

Nick had the coolest hair.. NOT MANY can pull off the straight hair thing but he was one of them...I repeat NOT MANY can rock the hair out! I saw him in Columbus Circle while driving through and I got his attention for about 3 seconds.. it was cool.. I was able to send him some positive energy via shout out while chilling at a red light.

Sugar Bar NYC was my return after a 1 year hiatus from the music industry after I left Monsta Island Czars, the old label I worked for and a lot of negative people behind.

Sugar Bar was the platform for me to perform some new material and it was great.. a great feeling to have a place known for really great vocalists, receive me and let me do my thing! I met their daughter and she's such a sweet person. I haven't seen her in years but when I did meet her, she was very warm... just like the music her parents create and put out to the world to vibe to.

I am so sorry for this loss to the family and to the fans. I am proud that we still have his contribution to the world of music which will always have a timeless message. Thank you Nick!

Our "Domo Arigato: Japan Appreciation Festival 2011" up in the Bronx this past weekend was amazing! We were able to raise money that will donate later this week to NYC's Japan Society! Below are some of the highlights!

The Domo Arigato Fund was created by a team of NY based artists that traveled together to Japan this past November 2010 for Japan Music Week and more. The terrible earthquake and Tsunami that following March 2011 was the catalyst to push the Domo Arigato artists to do something as a way to give back to Japan.

The Domo Arigato collective is Green Street, TastyKeish, Conscious, Cavalier, Raye 6, Eye2025, Emjae, Trezure, and MeccaGodZilla. Honorable mention Mio Soul for her great help organizing and for making sushi for the day in addition to performing! Also Rie, Rei, Natsuki and Star Fleet for rocking the stage!

I have to laugh at myself anytime I say, I can't stand rainy weather LOL...NYC was SMOKING HOT!!!!

The weather makes me think of 1 of the funnier experiences I had with my boy Garuda. On his first visit to NYC, I met up with him and we had some mexican food. He tasted the chilly and was like..."is this Hot to you?" I replied yes and he's like nah yo.. "That's not hot.. come to Singapore..I'll show you hot!" Not only is the weather hot...their spices I'm sure dwarf the USA spices 10 fold... Garuda then proceeded to put the USA style chilly on his meal like it was fudge on a Sundae. Clearly the American Spices are just plain derivative! I can't wait to visit Southeast Asia and Singapore one day! I already know I'm totally NOT ready but Ima try anyways!

A Monthly Bondfire had an intimate vibe for the 3rd Annual "Ladies Night".

My boy Ni Ko is visiting from Singapore and once again got to see how we get down in NY.

It was a blessing really because Ni Ko got to see the realness but more so, my community got to really see what Mio Soul's skills are really made of. I got to introduce her to the fam....

...AND She tore it down, providing a soulful Jazz style and some party POP steez.. had the club rocking hard!

When it was all said and done, Kool Herc, yes the father of hip hop himself, stepped up to the front of the stage to inquire about Mio Soul's contact info. It was amazing.

People sometimes brush us off... be we got skills yo. For the father of hip hop to give Mio Soul props, that's a big deal!

This is why I like Lil B. Hate if you want to. LISTEN THO.. REALLY LISTEN!

The title of his album is a challenge to the hyper masculine, braggadocio Hip Hop arena. I TOTALLY DON'T cosign the on the fence activity BUT it's ill. Lil B is getting on the cross to rep. Many will throw stones. If he lyrically goes in, like the above freestyle. It will be great... just reality checking people. Divine Life put me on to Lil B.
